Weed Measurements Explained: Grams, Eighths, and NJ Purchase Limits

Weed Measurements Explained: Grams, Eighths, and NJ Purchase Limits

Walk into any NJ dispensary for the first time, and the menu reads like a math test.

Eighths, quarters, zips, 3.5g, 7g, 28g.

The budtender asks what size you want, and you’re not entirely sure what any of those numbers mean in practice — how much weed that actually is, how long it lasts, or what any of it should cost.

Here’s the cheat sheet you need before your first visit.

Quick Takeaways

  • One ounce of weed equals 28 grams; a “zip” is just slang for the same thing
  • NJ dispensaries can sell up to 1 ounce of flower per transaction; you can legally possess up to 6 ounces
  • An eighth (3.5g) runs $35–60 at NJ dispensaries, depending on brand tier; a full ounce runs $180–420
  • NJ flower prices dropped 26% in the past year, narrowing the gap with street pricing
  • 7 grams (a quarter) is the sweet spot for most regular NJ shoppers

How many grams are in an ounce of weed?

28 grams. Technically 28.3495g, but every dispensary in the country rounds to 28. That single number unlocks the entire measurement ladder: an eighth is 3.5g (28 ÷ 8), a quarter is 7g, a half is 14g, and a full ounce is 28g.

Cannabis is one of the few consumer products in the U.S. sold in a hybrid of metric grams and imperial ounces — a leftover from the underground market that legal dispensaries simply adopted.

Once you memorize the ladder, every flower menu in New Jersey makes sense.

If it’s your first time, an eighth is the standard starting purchase. It’s enough to try a strain for a week without overcommitting, and it’s the size most NJ dispensaries price most competitively.

How many grams is a zip?

A zip is 28 grams — one full ounce. The name comes from the pre-legalization era when an ounce of flower fit cleanly into a quart-size Ziploc bag.

Leafly’s cannabis glossary traces the term to exactly that origin. You’ll still hear “zip” in conversation, on Reddit, and in hip-hop, but inside a licensed NJ dispensary, your budtender will just say “ounce.”

At La Vida Gardens, a full ounce is available through rotating Mix & Match deals at up to 50% off, which can bring your effective per-eighth price into the mid-$20s.

If you’ve found a strain you like and you’re going through an eighth a week, buying a zip on a promo day is the single best cost-per-gram play in the building.

How much weed is 1.5 oz, and why does that number keep coming up?

1.5 ounces is 42 grams — roughly twelve eighths or six quarters. This number trips up a lot of NJ shoppers because it floats around older articles from the 2021 decriminalization debate, but it’s no longer the operative possession limit.

Here’s the current law. Under CREAMMA, NJ dispensaries can sell the following per transaction to anyone 21+:

  • Flower: up to 1 ounce (28.35g)
  • Solid concentrates (wax, shatter, resin): up to 4g
  • Liquid concentrates / vape oil: up to 4g
  • Edibles: up to 1,000 mg total THC
  • Any combination adding up to the 1 oz flower equivalent

You can legally possess up to 6 ounces (168g) anywhere in the state. Going over 6 oz is a fourth-degree crime with up to 18 months in prison and a $25,000 fine.

So 1.5 ounces?

Well within the possession limit, but more than you can buy in a single visit — you’d need two separate transactions.

Why is 7 grams of weed the sweet spot?

A quarter ounce (7 grams) is enough flower to last a week or two without committing to a half or full ounce, and the per-gram price typically drops $1–3 below buying eighths individually.

Most NJ regulars settle into quarters once they’ve found their strain. It’s enough to try two different eighths side-by-side if you want variety, or commit to one strain for the full week if you know what you like.

At La Vida Gardens, a mid-tier quarter runs roughly $85–95 (the Verano Fresh Powder Reserve is one of the current options) versus two separate eighths at $50 each ($100). That $5–15 savings per quarter adds up to $20–60 a month if you’re buying weekly.

If you’re still figuring out which strains work for you, buy two different eighths instead of one quarter. Once you’ve settled on a go-to, switch to quarters and save.

How much does an ounce of weed cost at an NJ dispensary?

$180–420, depending on brand tier. NJ’s average flower price per gram dropped from $10.98 to $8.09 in the year ending October 2025 — a 26% decline. At $8.09 per gram, that puts the average ounce around $226 before tax.

In practice, NJ dispensary flower falls into three tiers:

  • Budget/value tier ($35–45 per eighth). Good Green, Simply Herb, shake, and popcorn lines. Solid THC, less bag appeal, best mg-per-dollar on the menu.
  • Mid-tier ($45–55 per eighth). Illicit, The Botanist, Grassroots, Anthologie. This is where most NJ shoppers land. At La Vida Gardens, Illicit strains like Bruce Banner, Chem Butter, and GMO Cookies run $50 per eighth.
  • Premium ($55–65+ per eighth). Cookies, RYTHM, Verano Reserve. Top-shelf flower with craft-level trim and marketing prices to match. Cookies That Badu at LVG runs $60 per eighth.

The deals change the math significantly. La Vida Gardens runs a rotating Mix & Match Half Ounce at 40% off and a Mix & Match Ounce at 50% off.

On a 50%-off ounce day, a $50 eighth brand drops to $25 per eighth, effective — which puts dispensary pricing squarely in street territory.

Tax adds roughly 8–10% at checkout: 6.625% NJ sales tax, up to 2% municipal transfer tax, and the Social Equity Excise Fee ($2.50 per ounce, embedded in wholesale cost). A $50 eighth typically rings up around $53–55.

Are dispensary prices worth it compared to the street?

At the eighth level, the street is still usually cheaper: $30–40 vs $35–60 at a dispensary. At the ounce level, the gap has nearly closed: $150–250 on the street vs $180–420 at a dispensary. But what the dispensary gives you that the street can’t is the part that most people are underweight.

Every batch of flower on a licensed NJ dispensary shelf has been lab-tested for pesticides, heavy metals, mold, mycotoxins, and residual solvents. The label shows exact THC and terpene percentages.

You know the strain name, the cultivator, and the harvest date. If something’s wrong with the product, you have legal recourse.

La Vida Gardens carries 50+ flower SKUs across roughly a dozen cultivators, with new drops every week.

The street gives you none of that. What it does give you is sometimes a cheaper eighth and no tax. For some buyers, that tradeoff is enough. But the trend line is clear: as dispensary prices come down, the legal market is winning.

Dan K Reports’ analysis of NJ CRC Metrc data shows monthly adult-use revenue jumping from $70–80M at $12.49 per gram to $102.9M at $8.09 per gram. People are switching as prices compress, and they’re not switching back.

Know three numbers before you walk in

28 (grams in an ounce), 1 (the ounce cap per transaction), 6 (ounces you can legally possess). That’s the entire framework.

Start with a gram or an eighth of something mid-tier so you can gauge tolerance and taste before committing to a quarter or larger. Ask the budtender to match terpene profiles to what you’re looking for — sleep, focus, social, pain — rather than just chasing the highest THC percentage on the menu.

And check the specials page before you come in, because the promos rotate weekly and can cut your per-gram cost in half.
